Why Should Christians Pray?

1Corinthians 14:4 KJV He that speaketh in an unknown tongue edifieth himself; but he that prophesieth edifieth the church.

The word edify in the greek is the word “oikodomeō”. It means to build, to found, to establish. Metaphorically, it means to promote growth in Christian wisdom, affection, grace etc.

So, Paul is saying that when we speak with other tongues, we are establishing ourselves! We are promoting our growth.

What are we being established in? The truth of the gospel.

Jude 1:20 KJV But ye, beloved, building up yourselves on your most holy faith, praying in the Holy Ghost,

Jude 1:20 AMP But you, beloved, build yourselves up [founded] on your most holy faith [make progress, rise like an edifice higher and higher], praying in the Holy Spirit;

When we pray, it begins to dawn on us that “we are what the word says we are.” We have what the word says we have. And we can do what the word says we can do!

We also begin to walk more confidently in the reality of the power of God at work in us! Yes the power of God is alive in us. And much more, we can make that power available in the place of prayer, such that we take authority over every situation.

James 5:16b AMP The earnest (heartfelt, continued) prayer of a righteous man makes tremendous power available [dynamic in its working].

So we keep praying. We don’t give up.

1Thessalonian 5:17 AMP Be unceasing in prayer [praying perseveringly];

Romans 12:11-12 AMP Never lag in zeal and in earnest endeavor; be aglow and burning with the Spirit, serving the Lord.  (12)  Rejoice and exult in hope; be steadfast and patient in suffering and tribulation; be constant in prayer.

We pray unto effectiveness. We pray till the eyes of our understanding is enlightened. We pray till the word of God dawns strongly on our hearts. We pray till we see this gospel cover our communities.  We pray till we begin to see our faculties bearing fruits. We are fruitful in ministry. Fruitful in the demonstration of the Spirit. Fruitful in the expressions of the power of God. Fruitful in evangelism and discipleship.

These and much more we begin to walk in as we give ourselves to consistent praying in the Holy Ghost.

Stay blessed
